Winter, the marine movie star of 2011’s “Dolphin Tale,” is in critical condition at her Florida aquarium, according to local reports.

The Clearwater Marine Aquarium broke the news this week that the 16-year-old bottlenose dolphin has been fighting a gastrointestinal infection. Handlers now say that she may not pull through her illness.

“She wasn’t quite eating as much as she typically would, so that kind of ramped things up in terms of us wanting to do more in terms of her care,” said aquarium president Dr. James Powell in a statement to Tampa’s WFLA.

“We’re going to do everything we possibly can to make sure she gets the correct treatment,” Powell added.

Winter swam into the hearts of America as the most charismatic dolphin with a prosthetic tail. She came to the aquarium in 2005 as a rescue after being found entangled in a crab trap line off the Florida coast.

On Monday, members of Winter’s care team noted that she “wasn’t acting like her normal self. Because of the strong bond staff members have with Winter, they quickly noticed she was not interested in eating and began work to understand why,” they wrote in a statement on Thursday.

Her inspiring story was later adapted to the silver screen in “Dolphin Tale,” starring Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd, Kris Kristofferson and Morgan Freeman.

Earlier this week, Powell said experts were “looking at it holistically, from a medical standpoint,” while also closely monitoring her behavior — any indication that Winter was ready to give up her fight.

“Those test results have shown that despite our aggressive treatment that her condition hasn’t really been improving and perhaps even worsening,” he said.

By Wednesday night, the aquarium said her condition had become critical, while they continue “exploring all possible options to save Winter’s life,” the aquarium said on Facebook.

They’ve also said their facilities will be closed on Friday so that staff may “focus that vital care for Winter and create the best possible environment for her medical team,” their statement also said.

Meanwhile, fans and friends are sending well-wishes to the beloved dolphin.

“Winter is adored by the world. We wanna just thank everyone who has been sending us … all the thank you’s and love and caring for Winter,” said Powell.

He continued, “We just want to thank everybody who’s just shown so much love and appreciation and best wishes for her, for her recovery.”
