Drive-In Memories

I’ve done several piece on drive-ins over the years, so I know that for technical reasons it’s practically impossible to get a good photograph of one in operation. So we resorted to the most famous photograph of one ever, taken in 1956 by the great O. Winston Link. The irony is that Link was actually interested in taking pictures of steam engines, like the beauty at the right. The drive-in was there strictly as a scenic background. This is no casual shot; Link used banks of strategically placed lights, precisely timed the arrival of the train, painstakingly posed the couple in the convertible, and even pasted in the image of the plane on the screen. For much more on drive-in movies, including vintage images and adds, as well as lists of still-operating ozoners, go to Drive-in Theater, Drive-In Movie, Drive-Ins, American Drive-In and Brian’s Drive-In Theater.
