Trying to milk a few more scheckels out of standard DVD before Blu-ray takes over (if it indeed does), Paramount is quietly re-releasing a whopping 30 titles on August 6 with a clever gimmick. They all have new covers branding them as “I Love the ’80s,” after sister company VH1’s long-running series. Each title (some are on two discs) will also include a “fancy” CD with four songs: “Take On Me” (a-ha), “Lips Like Sugar” (Echo & The Bunnymen), “Need You Tonight” (INXS) and “Chains Of Love” (Erasure). Listing at $15 (which means you can buy them for $10 at Amazon and many other places), the titles include such obvious choices as “Urban Cowboy” and “Airplane,” as well as some much-less-obvious selections like Warren Beatty’s “Reds” — does the control-freak actor-director know about this? — and “Falling in Love,” a deservedly forgotten adultery drama starring Meryl Streep, Robert DeNiro and Mr. and Mrs. (at the time, anyway) Harvey Keitel. I can’t really say that I personally love the ’80s, having seen virtually every movie released during that decade and reviewed many of them. I’ve since become more selective.
