Last week, I wrote about the 30 titles that Paramount is reissuing on DVD Aug. 6 with new covers under the label âI Love the 80s,ââ complete with a bonus CD containing four songs from the period, listing for $15 apiece (which means $10 at many sellers). Strolling through a Target store in Middletown, N.Y. yesterday, I noticed they had already had 48 titles in the series on sale for a rock-bottom price of $7.50. Over at Wall-Mart, $7.50 buys a huge selection of double (sometimes triple) feature DVDs from various studios that donât always pop up on Amazon and other online retailers. The best buy I found contains two great George Clooney flicks, David O. Russellâs âThree Kingsââ (1999) and Wolfgang Petersonâs severely underrated âThe Perfect Stormââ (2000), both co-starring Mark Wahlberg. And these aren’t bare-bones editions either. There were three commentary tracks on âThree Kingsââ and two on âThe Perfect Storm,ââ plus making-of featurettes on both titles. All for $7.50 (it lists for $15 and sells for $13 at Amazon). No wonder the studios want to switch customers over to Blu-ray, which has more generous profit margins (âThe Perfect Stormââ on Blu-ray lists for $30 and retails for $20 at Amazon). Over at FYE, they had a couple of bins of forgotten-but-not-gone VHS tapes going at 10 for $1 out front. Mostly public-domain junk, but some oddities like âRed Surfââ (1990), a Clooney flick Iâd never heard of, and âWho is Harry Kellerman and Why is He Saying Those Things About Me?ââ a 1971 Dustin Hoffman comedy that has yet to appear on DVD. Amazon is selling new copies for as little as 48 cents, plus $2.98 for standard shipping.
