The dying MGM is accepting “final” bids from potential owners until Friday, but  the studio is already dumping its DVDs at fire sale prices, with hundreds of titles being sold online for well under $10 — some for as little as $2. With MGM devaluing its library — which includes post-1952 United Artists titles, the Selznick, Goldwyn and Orion/AIP libraries, as well as assorted titles from Embassy and Castle Rock, as well as MGM’s own post-1986 releases — this way, you have to wonder if Time Warner or any of the other potential bidders will pony up the $1.5 billion or so mininum the studio’s creditors seem to be seeking for the sale (which also includes half the rights to “The Hobbit” and the James Bond franchise). If nobody wins this non-auction, then MGM may be forced into a messy bankruptcy.
