Set in a candy-colored Miami, this movie about the elderly Lily (Gena Rowlands) and her studly dance instructor Michael (Cheyenne Jackson) has the bright, peppy tone of a “Golden Girls” episode.

Unfortunately, it’s also shot like one. Highly episodic and hopelessly contrived, the film shows how this mismatched pair find friendship, laughter and love, beat by beat. Jackson has a vivid personality and powers through the dull lines like the trouper he is, but there’s only so much snap you can put in a wet noodle.

Still, it gets two stars, and I can tell you why in two words: Gena Rowlands. Seeing this great actress, age 84, draw real feeling and laughs from such mediocre material is worth the watch.
