From the country that gave us “Degrassi” comes another overwrought teen drama called “Giant Little Ones.”
The Canadian flick turns high school into hell: It’s got breakups, coming-out traumas, rape, destroyed friendships and plenty of physical violence. It’s the anti-“Love, Simon.”
This deeply depressing film is about two best friends — Franky and Ballas — who wind up in bed together after a night of heavy drinking. When the guys wake up, Franky (Josh Wiggins) sees it as an innocent act that’s worth a conversation; Ballas (Darren Mann) spirals out of control, spreading nasty hallway rumors to coddle his masculine pride.
That the movie goes down that road, rather than becoming the usual sugary romance, is refreshing. Both boys are good, and Kyle MacLachlan gives a tender turn as Franky’s gay dad. But the sheer amount of issues shoved in here is overpowering.
If everything’s a total drag from start to finish, there’s nothing worth fighting for.
