Many reviews for the sleeper hit “Superbad” noted that this was director Greg Mottola’s first feature since his debut with “Daytrippers” more than a decade ago. Few remember that back in 2002, the Weinsteins-run Miramax dismissed Mottola as the director of “Duplex,” a comedy starring Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore. Mottola was replaced by Danny DeVito and the result was excruciating and a major flop to boot. During the last decade, Mottola has also directed episodes of “Arrested Development” and other sitcoms, as well as playing bit parts in a couple of Woody Allen flicks. But it looks like he won’t have to wait another decade for another feature directing gig. The post-Weinstein Miramax, of all studios, has signed Mottola to direct his own script “Adventureland” with Jesse Eisenberg (“The Squid and the Whale”) starring. Variety reports: “Story, set in the summer of 1987, concerns an uptight recent college grad who’s forced to take a minimum-wage job at the local amusement park after realizing he can’t afford his dream European tour. The experience helps him to loosen up a bit as he finds first love, forms new friendships and matures just in time to enter the real world in the fall.”
