Director Catherine Hardwicke won’t be directing “New Moon,” the sequel to surprise hit “Twilight,” but there are conflicting reports over whether she was fired because Summit Entertainment was unhappy with her work on the first film, or they couldn’t come to terms on a concept for the followup. Nikki Finke reported the former this afternoon, while Anne Thompson of Variety followed up with the lattter version a couple of hours later. Either way, it’s a helluva reward and slap in the face for the director of a movie that’s already grossed $140 million, a huge number for an indie. “Twilight” is by far the most successful movie ever directed by a woman, surpassing Mimi Leder’s “Deep Impact.”
