The little-indie-that-could, “Avatar,” the highest-grossing movie of all time, hits DVD today, and I’m really curious to see how it does. Anyone think it will break sales records?

I really couldn’t say. Will people really want to watch the movie on their TV screens, without the benefit of the IMAX, 3-D experience? After all, it was the technology that really seemed to drive the popularity of the film. Without that, it’s just a slightly goofy animated, sci-fi fable full of cringe-worthy lines like, “I see you.”

I’m also curious what studio execs will make of the DVD sales. Ever since “Avatar” took off, they’ve been rushing to produce 3-D films, because they seem certain that the lesson from “Avatar” was that 3-D equals massive box office. Then by that same logic, the movie should be a relative dud on DVD. No 3-D, no interest, right?

So what if it has huge sales on DVD? Does that mean that people actually like the story and the visuals, regardless of how they experience them?
