How ‘Sweet’ it is
If you happen to be looking for something to do on Saturday (May Day) you might want to check out a screening of the newspaper classic “Sweet Smell of Success” (1957) at Film Forum. I’ll be introducing the 5:40 p.m. show. Burt Lancaster stars as a powerful and not very nice newspaper columnist inspired by Walter Winchell, and Tony Curtis plays a sleazy press agent. My first newspaper job was as a copy boy at the Daily Mirror (a Hearst tabloid that went under in 1963) when Winchell was still writing his column there. The Forum is on Houston Street, west of Sixth Avenue. Details: filmforum.org. Hope to see you there.
