The gorgeous Blu-Ray package (for sale here) containing the 50th anniversary edition of “West Side Story” just arrived the other day, and as John Nolte writes, the movie is still a beaut, and the location shooting at the beginning is an essential time capsule of the area that today is home to Lincoln Center (ground has already been broken on it by the time the movie was filmed) and consequently is one of the most desirable neighborhoods on Earth. Nolte singles out the majesty of the Leonard Bernstein score, and correctly so. But the movie would be unbearably cheesy and melodramatic were it not leavened by the lyrics of the youthful prodigy Stephen Sondheim.
