Premiere Magazine has drawn its last breath with the new issue now on the stands, but its sterling critic Glenn Kenny — who probably matches my tastes more closely than any other major reviewer out there — soldiers on with reviews and a witty blog at premiere.com. Under the circumstances, Glenn is less than amused by Variety Editor Peter Bart’s idiotic suggestion that newspapers and magazines should fire experienced critics and replace us with 19-year-olds who will be better able to appreciate blockbusters like “300” — and less likely to make snarky comments about movies they don’t like (guess Bart hasn’t read anything by 19-year-old bloggers lately). As we noted here Friday, Bart (pictured during a workout) suggested New York Times critic A.O. Scott — along with most other critics — wasn’t buff enough to mock the muscle-bound heroes of “300.” Tony declined comment, but Glenn concludes his attack thusly: “A less refined and kindly critic than myself would here note that Bart isn’t exactly a body-builder himself.” And then 6-foot-3 Glenn moves in for the kill.
