“Leaves of Grass,” a noirish redneck comedy starring Edward Norton in a dual role, has had its Friday opening cancelled at the last minute. A rep for the film, which debuted at last fall’s Toronto International Film Festival, says it’s been acquired by a new distributor who will give the flick a more ambitious release than planned by First Look Studios. which was opening it on a single screen at the Angelika as well as in L.A. She said an announcement identifying the new distributor would be made in the next 24 hours. Keri Russell, Richard Dreyfuss, Susan Sarandon and the film’s director, Tim Blake Nelson, co-star. The Coen Brothers-inflected “Leaves of Grass,” whose title refers to both Walt Whitman and pot dealing, is prominently advertised and receives mixed notices today in the Village Voice, New York Observer and Time Out New York.
