The biggest laughs at this morning’s HFPA announcement came when a best supporting actor nod went to Tom Cruise for his glorified cameo in “Tropic Thunder,” which drew another nomination in the same category for Robert Downey Jr. There were also guffaws that James Franco, among the multiple snubees for “Milk,” somehow ended up with a nomination for best actor, musical or comedy, for his turn as a stoner in “Pineapple Express” (for which Seth Rogen, the movie’s actual lead, was snubbed).
