Box-office failure didn’t stop the actors branch from nominating Tommy Lee Jones as Best Actor for “In the Valley of Elah” or Cate Blanchett as Best Actress for “Elizabeth: The Golden Age.” Blanchett pushed out Angelina Jolie, who had her own acclaimed performance in a flop, “A Mighty Heart.” Blanchett was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her tour de force as a Bob Dylan clone in another underperforming title, “I’m Not There.” In Best Supporting Actor, Casey Affleck got a nod for Best Supporting Actor for “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.”
