To everyone’s surprise, Sony’s “Surf’s Up” will compete for Best Animated Picture against “Ratatouille” (a prohibitive favorite with three other nods) and the French-Iranian “Persepolis.” The “Surf’s Up” slot was widely expected to go to “The Simpsons Movie.” Left on the cutting room floor: “Bee Movie” and “Beowulf.”
