Frontrunner Penelope Cruz wins the first award of the evening for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and delivers a charming, emotional acceptance speech. In a major break with tradition, clips of the nominated performers weren’t shown but their work was described by five past winners in this category: Whoopi Goldberg, Eva Marie Saint, Angelina Huston, Goldie Hawn and Tilda Swinton. The award was presented to Cruz by Swinton — not Javier Bardem, who won Best Supporting Actor last year. So far I’m 0 for 1, have incorrectly predicted that Viola Davis of “Doubt” would upset Cruz.
