In the evening’s first upset, the Japanese “Departures” won over Israel’s heavily favored “Waltz With Bashir,” which I predicted to win. This is a notoriously difficult to handicap category, since voting is limited to people who have seen all five nominees at academy-sanctioned screenings. Make that 13 out of 20 for me.
