Production numbers, banned from the Oscars a few years back as a time-wasting bore, returned with Hugh Jackman and others performing Oscar-winning tunes in a stunningly bad sequence directed by Baz Luhrmann. Even he looked embarrassed when the camera caught him afterwards.
