The outlook is promising for David Cronenberg’s “Eastern Promises,” which not only won the audience award at the just-concluded Toronto Film Festival but is selling out theaters as it opens in limited release. The sizzling $36,845 per-screen average for the weekend for the Russian Mafia flick starring a full-frontal Viggo Mortensen is among the top 100 PSA’s of all time, dwarfing the respectable-for-September $5,087 per screen generated by “The Brave One” in ultra-wide release. “Eastern Promises” widens to 1,300 screens next week, and could give the two wide openers, “Resident Evil: Extinction” and “Sydney White” a run for the top spot. Meanwhile, the heavily promoted Jodie Foster vigilante vehicle mustered just a little over $14 million to take the No. 1 spot. So don’t expect a remake of “Ms. 45” anytime soon, though you can bet someone optioned the rights in case “The Brave One” hit.
