Even most hard-core movie buffs would be hard-pressed to tell you anything about Joseph H. Hazen except to note that his name appears on the copyright of the many, many films Hal B. Wallis (pictured with his contract players Dean Martin and Elizabeth Scott) produced for Paramount release from the 1940s well into the 1960s. Moving Image Source, the splendid new website just launched by the Museum of the Moving Image under the supervision of erstwhile critic Dennis Lim, offers much fascinating information. It includes a lengthy article by Ed Sikov on the groundbreaking partnership of Wallis and Hazen, a former Warner Bros. lawyer who structured a then-novel financing arrangement with Paramount that resulted in many of that studio’s best-known films of the postwar era and provided a blueprint for how most films are made today. Hazen’s estate also provided underwriting for the new site.
