Ode to Homer
Thanks in no small part to a brilliant marketing campaign by our corporate cousins at 20th Century Fox, the good-but-not-great “The Simpsons Movie” finished its first weekend with an estimated $71.8 million, nearly 50 per cent more than predicted. That’s the No. 3 three-day opening for any animated flick, trailing only the second and third “Shrek” entries, and, as Steve Mason at Fantasy Moguls points out, the best-ever opening for a film derived directly from a TV series. Next weekend, Homer will defend his throne against “The Bourne Ultimatum,” which turns out to be one of the best flicks of the summer, if not the year.
