The actress, 25, announced that she has exited “Deep Cuts” weeks before the movie starts shooting.
A’zion received public backlash after she was cast as a Jewish character with Mexican heritage.

“Deep Cuts” is a film adaptation of the 2025 novel of the same name, written by Holly Brickley.
On Monday, an X user posted a screenshot of an alleged conversation between Brickley and a fan that addressed A’zion’s casting.
“I was just wondering if Zoe’s character will be remaining Latina or [if] the character’s been rewritten,” the fan asked the writer of the film adaptation.
“Surely it will be rewritten!” Brickley replied. “Which happens all the time. For the record in the book Zoe is half Jewish and half Mexican.”
She added, “But in the script it is not specified. Also I have nothing to do with casting.”

Brickley’s response sparked immediate outrage. One critic wrote on X: “Zoe is supposed to be [Mexican] … very disappointed with the cast, especially since it’s mentioned several times in the book.”
A second noted: “How about casting an actual Latina for the role of Zoe Gutierrez?!?!!”
A’zion responded to the fandom’s concerns, writing on her Instagram Stories: “THANK YOU guys for bringing this to my attention. I AGREE WITH EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU! This is why I love you guys. I’m so sorry that this happened.”

“It is SO important for me to let you in on how it all went down: I went in for Percy, but was offered Zoe instead and instantly said yes! I’m so pissed y’all, I hadn’t read the book and should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting…and now that I know what I know???”
A’zion says she sees her departure as an opportunity to let the character be portrayed by someone of Mexican heritage.
“I’d never take a role from someone else that’s meant to do it. That SHOULD do it!” the “I Love LA” actress explained. “That’s not me. There are a plentitude of people more than capable of playing this role and I am NOT one of them. I can’t wait to see who it ends up being.”
