Hm. Where have I heard this one before? Movie made for chicks gets absolutely roasted by the critics, yet manages to pack a mighty advance punch at the box office, as Lou points out below. Oh yeah: “New Moon,” whose audience managed to care, like, not at all about the opinions of the critics (very few of whom fell into their demographic, and totally didn’t get it) and made it the top-earner in advance ticket sales, ever. What should Hollywood be deducing here? That it’s a worthwhile investment to make more – and better – event movies that appeal to girls and women. The pickings are mighty slim in that area this summer: August’s “Eat Pray Love” is about all I can see on the horizon – looming very large, I might add. (And, if I had my druthers, “The Girl Who Played with Fire,” but I kind of doubt it.) Here in New York, I’m nominating another movie for “girls’ night out” status: let’s all get together and make the awesome documentary “Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work” break records when it opens on June 11th. If ever there was an antidote to the saccharine platitudes being spouted by Carrie and co., it’s Joan. Check out the trailer here.
