This Estonian film from director Zaza Urushadze is the last of 2014’s outstanding Foreign Film Oscar nominees to be released in the US.
Set in the Caucasus during a 1992 civil war, it’s the story of Ivo (Lembit Ulfsak), an ethnic Estonian, and his friend Margus (Elmo Nüganen), whose tangerine orchards are in the line of fire. A Chechen fighter, Ahmed (Giorgi Nakashidze), is wounded nearby, as is a Georgian fighter, Niko (Misha Meskhi). Ivo must nurse both men, who vow to kill each other as soon as they recover.
Ivo’s farmhouse looks leftover from another century, which gives a timeless feeling, as does the regal bearing of Ulfsak and the dry humor of the script. The film telegraphs its pacifist message early on, but it’s still deeply affecting.
