Patrick Goldstein has a smart post today squashing publicist-planted ersatz “Oscar buzz” for Ben Affleck’s Beantown bandits movie “The Town.” Goldstein liked the picture more than I did but it’s pretty obvious this isn’t an Oscar effort. It’s a slightly above-average bank-robbery flick, nothing more. Ben Affleck’s previous effort “Gone Baby Gone” was an artfully wrought piece of work, but there is nothing special about “The Town,” which employs well-worn formula conventions in the service of a story you’ve seen many times before. Even in a ten-picture field of Best Picture nominees, I can think of a lot of movies that have already come out that are well ahead of it. It’ll be forgotten long before Oscar ballots go out.
