Thanks to “Avatar” and the expanded field, today’s crop of Best Picture nominees is averaging $151 million at the domestic box office, the first time it’s been anywhere near that high since 2003 and “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.” Box Office Mojo says that over the past five years, the average gross has ranged from $37 to $49 million.
