Oscar Watch: ‘Eat Pray Love’
I have to strongly disagree with my esteemed colleague Kyle Smith (see below) about this one’s Oscar chances. I don’t think “Eat Pray Love” is written or directed (by Ryan Murphy) anywhere near well enough to get the acting nominations he’s predicting for Julia Roberts and Richard Jenkins. Roberts is the only actor here with an actual character to play, and as much as I’ve loved her in other movies like “Duplicity,” performing characters with inner turmoil is simply not in Julia’s skill set. And like Amy Adams’ character in “Julia and Julia,” her character is basically a spoiled whiner. My review will appear Friday in The Post — meanwhile, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter tote up the manifold problems with the ultra-ultra-slick “Eat Pray Love” in their negative reviews.
