Helen Mirren totally knocks it out of the park — hilarious one moment, grandly tragic the next — as Mrs. Leo Tolstoy in Michael Hoffman’s “The Last Station,” which Sony Pictures Classics will be releasing on Dec. 4. SPC will be giving a well-deserved Oscar push to past winner Mirren as the wife of the dying novelist (Christopher Plummer), battling in 1910 for the estate of her husband of 48 years with Tolstoy’s devious aide, played by Paul Giamatti. The actors are both very good indeed, but the movie belongs to Mirren, who in one remarkable scene throws herself in a freezing lake to protest Mr. T’s depature to the titular location.
