As predicted here, the newly resurgent “The King’s Speech” leads today’s Oscar nominations with 12. What’s surprising is that the runner-up is “True Grit” with 10, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Joel and Ethan Coen (who were snubbed in the Director’s Guild of America nods).

This is not especially good news for “The Social Network” — tying for third place in the nominations with “Inception,” at eight — which failed to land a Best Supporting Actor nomination for either Andrew Garfield or Justin Timberlake.

The actor nominations are made by the actor’s branch, the academy’s largest. The fact they also passed over Mila Kunis and Barbara Hershey in the Best Supporting Actress race does not augur especially well for “Black Swan” pulling off an upset. Also weighing against the film is the failure to secure a Best Original Screenplay nomination — no film has won without a writing nod since “Titantic” in 1997.

Ben Affleck’s “The Town” did not make the cut for Best Picture, but the micro-budgeted “Winter’s Bone” did — and it did deliver perhaps the day’s biggest surprise, a Best Supporting Actor nod for the little-known John Hawkes.
