With the Director’s Guild today joining the Producers Guild in nominating “The Dark Knight” for its feature prize, it now looks like “The Dark Knight” will indeed land a spot in Oscar’s final five. The other four nominees, which match the PGA’s, are four films that have dominated the race for the past couple of months — “Slumdog Millionaire,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Milk” and “Frost/Nixon.” I think it’s a remarkable close race between the first three, with “Slumdog” ahead by a hair. “The Dark Knight” likely squeaked in at the expense of the waning “Doubt,” which appears to be joining the other two Scott Rudin-produced Oscar hopefuls, “Revolutionary Road” and “The Reader,” on the also-ran list. I’d say more, but I’m really trying to be compassionate (see below) — even moreso after just receiving an apologetic phone call from Miramax prexy Daniel Battsek.
