The silent comedy phenomenon moved one step closer to Oscar glory when it won the top prize from the Producers Guild of America early Sunday morning.

Shot in black and white with a single line of dialogue, “The Artist” topped PGA nominees “Bridesmaids,” “The Descendants,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Help,” “Hugo,” “The Ides of March,” “Midnight in Paris,” “Moneyball,” and “War Horse.”

PGA winners have matched Oscar’s Best Picture for the last four years, and 15 of the 22 years the prize has been given.

“The Artist” won the Golden Globe for best comedy or musical last week, and it’s been nominated for awards by the Directors Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild.

It’s expected to be nominated for Best Picture, and in several other categories, when Oscar nominations are announced on Tuesday.
