Having seen and reviewed “The Social Network” with a four-star notice in today’s print edition, I finally feel ready to publish my first list of Best Picture predictions.

Right now, “The Social Network” is on top — it’s a bravura piece of filmmaking with the requisite gravitas, and will likely net nominations for director David Fincher, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth and acting nominations for Jesse Eisenberg and possibly (gasp) Justin Timberlake. 

That said, as we were noting last month, it’s often not a great thing to be way out in front at this point in the Oscar race, especially with a film that taps into the zeitgeist as strongly as this one does. Look at “Up in the Air” last year, which ended up coming up empty on Oscar night.

I have seen every single film on this list, by the way. There’s a second list of films that may be contenders, based on past performance of the talents involved, that I haven’t yet seen.
