The deal to release “The Reader” on Dec. 12 (see two posts below) may result in the possibly unprecedented happenstance of two Oscar-chasing Holocaust movies opening on the same day. Dec. 12 has long been staked out by Paramount Vantage for Edward Zwick’s “Defiance” starring Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell in an adaptation of Nechama Tec’s book about three brothers who flee Nazi-occupied Poland. Also competing for the academy’s attention on Dec. 12 is Miramax’s “Doubt” with Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman and a one-week Oscar qualification run of “Che” in L.A. and New York, Given recent history, it wouldn’t be totally surprising if the Weinstein Co. opted to open “The Reader” only for a week in Los Angeles to qualify for the Oscars — though the lack of a New York run would disqualify it from awards from the New York Film Critics Circle, a lesson Harvey learned a couple of years ago with “Factory Girl,”
