It’s unclear whether whether Warner Bros. is planning a serious Oscar campaign for Ledger or, as Terry Gilliam has suggested, they’re just fanning the flames for the enormously successful theatrical run of “The Dark Knight.” Certainly, if the timing of Mary-Kate’s testimony or the release of incriminating documents coincides with Oscar season, that’s probably not going to help. Hollywood and the fans so far have been willing to give Ledger a pass, rationalizing Ledger’s prescription drug use as a way of coping with the pressures of playing The Joker. If he was using illegally procured prescription drugs — and not many doctors are going to prescribe OxyContin to a healthy 28-year-old — this may have an impact with image-conscious Academy voters.
