The Screen Actors Guild has called a Friday morning meeting to consider cancelling a strike authorization vote whose results would be announced on Jan. 23, the day after Oscar nominations. The union acted after the leadership of its East Coast branch — 25 percent of the membership — balked at the idea, pointing out the lunacy of threatening a walkout even as the studios lay off thousands of employees in the face of the rapidly worsening economy.
