The SAG nominations are out. To me the most interesting thing is that Richard Jenkins has scored a best actor nod for “The Visitor,” while Leonardo DiCaprio was snubbed for “Revolutionary Road.” Also significant, I think, is the best supporting nod for Dev Patel, who is effectively the lead in “Slumdog Millionaire.” SAG is the largest of guilds and its awards nominating committee has a significant overlap with the academy’s actors branch which will make the Oscar nominations in the acting categories. But exactly how focused are the actors who aren’t running going to be on the awards this year? SAG is sending out a strike authorization ballot at the begining of next year, with results announced on the day after Oscar nominations. SAG’s awards will be given out two days later. At one point, SAG’s leadership called an emergency meeting for tomorrow to consider calling off the strike authorization, but then called off the meeting after the meeting amid growing dissention among its ranks, especially East Coast actors who oppose the idea of a strike.
