There has been an abundance of buzz about Martin Scorsese’s  “Shutter Island,” much of it negative. On Sunday, I decided to see for myself, fully expecting to be disappointed. I wasn’t. Scorsese keeps the twisty suspense level  high; and even Leonardo DiCaprio, not one of my favorite actors, turns in a powerful performance, as do Ben Kingsley, Mark Ruffalo  and Ingmar Bergman favorite  Max von Sydow. The film owes a giant debt to “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” (shown), the 1920 German expressionist classic by Robert Wiene. It’s worth tracking down on DVD.
