Pregnant Pause
Both agree that “Shrek the Third” will follow in third place, followed by the darkly comic Kevin Costner thriller “Mr. Brooks” (pictured here with William Hurt), which they think will fail to break into double digits, but still take in more over three days than the fast-plunging “Spider-Man 3.” “Mr. Brooks” scored a tepid 55 percent favorable reviews at Rotten Tomatoes — I awarded in two stars in the Post today. “Knocked Up” has one of the year’s best scores, 55 percent favorable. Kyle gave it four stars in his rave review the other day; I would have rated it a solid three if I were reviewing. In fact, the only major critic that RT counts as giving “Knocked Up” a rotten tomato is Carina Chocano of the Los Angeles Times. Her thoughtful review isn’t really a pan; Carina’s big complaint is that wildly overpraised writer-director Judd Apatow hasn’t tried very hard to understand the point of view of the pregnant woman (played by Katherine Heigl, pictured with Leslie Mann), and goes too easy on Seth Rogen’s character. I think it’s a point well taken and expressed.
