Despite personal ressurances by Harvey Weinstein that is no longer the case, I still tend to assume any movie opening during the last two weeks of August is a dump job. So my eyebrows reflexively went up when I saw the Weinstein Co.’s New Year’s Eve announcement that it will open Quentin Tarantino’s long-threatened World War II epic “Inglourious Basterds” (sic) on August 21 in North America (Co-partner Universal, which holds foreign rights, will announce international dates “soon”). The currently shooting film, which is aiming to premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, stars Brad Pitt, Mike Myers and Cloris Leachman. It’s worth noting that Harvey frequently shuffles release dates, especially if he smells the slightest whiff of Oscar potential.
