‘Raiders! The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made” shows how, in the 1980s, some kids spent parts of seven summers doing a shot-by-shot remake of “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Imagine “Moby-Dick” rewritten in crayon, and you’ll get the idea.

If you actually had filmmaking talent, you’d make an original film (Steven Spielberg didn’t spend his teen years reshooting “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre”), but in this doc, breathless cheerleading attends the two now-grown directors 30 years later as they try to do the one scene they couldn’t do the first time: the fist fight by the airplane.

Fanboys gotta fan, but beneath the surface “Raiders!” is the opposite of what it’s trying to be — not a salute to monomania, but a lesson in its destructiveness. One of the directors became a drug addict and the other nearly lost his job on their lost crusade, and when an explosion knocks out a bystander in the airplane scene, it becomes evident that film nerds can be lethal in addition to boring.
