I’ve been tipped that a “very surprise guest” will join director Ken Russell at tonight’s very rare screening of a 35mm print of “The Devils” (1971), which will kick off a Russell retrospective at Lincoln Center (a digital copy will be used at two other screenings). I’ve been sworn to secrecy about the guest’s identity. But this film — which is not available on DVD in the U.S. and apparently won’t be anytime in the foreseeable future after it was yanked by Warner two days after being offered on iTunes — is especially notorious for a scene where Vanessa Redgrave’s sexually repressed nun masturbates with a bone from a priest (the late Oliver Reed) who has been burned at the stake as a heretic.
