Richard Widmark (1914-2008)
Widmark excelled in many other kinds of films, especially westerns, and his 20 titles under contract to 20th Century Fox range included playing a safecracker in “O. Henry’s Full House,” a whaler in “Down to the Sea in Ships” and the divorced dad of George Foghorn Winslow in “My Pal Gus.” His career continued for decades after leaving Fox, and he never, ever gave less than a satisfying performance, including the neo-noir “Against All Odds.” Let’s home the academy wakes up and honors Doris Day, who, incidentally, co-starred with Widmark in 1958’s “The Tunnel of Love,” pictured above.
