Joe Leydon of Variety gushes, no, make that raves about Adam Sandler’s performance as a man trying to pick up the pieces after losing his family on 9/11 in “Reign Over Me,” which premiered at South by Southwest. The dramedy opens nationally next Friday. But even Jeffrey Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere, who’s been flogging the flick since getting an early look last fall, admits it’s not going to be easy to get serious moviegoers to turn out for Sandler, or to get Sander’s fans to see a semi-serious movie (heck, both groups shunned his pretentiously arty comedy “Punch Drunk Love”). Jeff links to an audio interview that director Mike Binder did with Maxim’s Pete Hammond. “It’s a hard movie to sell,” Binder says. “I don’t have big expectations.” According to Wells, Sandler will avoid the media in New York and Los Angeles during a cross-country tour for the film. Not surprising; Sandler looked like he would rather be having a root canal during his Lincoln Center press conference for “Punch Drunk Love.”
