The Wall Street Journal has an amusing story about how the movie “Shrek Forever After,” in an oddball Vidalia onions promo scheme, has hugely boosted sales by plastering the friendly ogre’s mug all over the onion section of the grocery store, where little kids order their mommies to stock up on my least favorite vegetable. From the Journal story: “Through June 14, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said, farmers had shipped eight million more pounds of Vidalias than by the same date last year—though the 2010 season started two weeks later than in 2009. ‘We’ve sold more onions up to this point in the season than we ever have in the past,’ says Brian Stanley of Stanley Farms, a large Vidalia grower.” I think it’s fair to say we’re going to see more wacky promotional ideas for movies, especially with Happy Meals in more trouble than the Gingerbread Man.
