Sony Pictures Classics will open Charlie Kaufman’s “Synecdoche, NY” in October, the specialty film arm announced today. The directorial debut by the writer of “Adaptation” and “Being John Malkovich” stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as an obsessed playwright, Catherine Keener and Michelle Williams as well as the oft-confused Samantha Morton and EmilyMortonWatson. It debuted to a mixed response at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is expected to turn up at the both the New York and Toronto Film Festivals.
