Stars Over Toronto
Tony Gilroy’s “Michael Clayton,” starring George Clooney as a Manhattan corporate lawyer at a crossroads in his life, is among the galas and special presentations announced today by the Toronto International Film Festival. Among the others: Gavin Hood’s political thriller “Rendition” with Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gylenhaal, Meryl Streep, Peter Sarsgaard and Alan Arkin; Neil Jordan’s revenge melodrama “The Brave One” starring Jodie Foster; Terry George’s dramatic “Reservation Road” with Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Connelly and Mira Sorvino; and “Nothing is Private,” a coming-of-age drama from “Six Feet Under” creator and “American Beauty” writer Alan Ball. Skipping the fest: James Mangold’s remake of the ’50s western “3:10 to Yuma” starring Russell Crowe and the ubiquitous Christian Bale, which will go straight into theaters on Sept. 7, to get a head start on the “The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” starring Brad Pitt. That means “3:10” will be going head to head with “The Nanny Diaries” starring box-office poison Scarlett Johansson, unless the Weinsteins decide to move it again. Which wouldn’t surprise us one bit.
