It may have famously tanked over the weekend, but the “Grindhouse” hype machine grinds on with new features that were assigned by editors weeks ago. Among the worthier entries is the New York Press’ interview with my old pal and Hell’s Kitchen neighbor Lloyd Kaufman of the Troma Team, who distributes many grindhouse classics, like Al Adamson’s “Satan’s Sadists” with Amber’s dad Russ Tamblyn, on DVD. Lloyd, whose primitivist work like “The Toxic Avenger” influenced “Grindhouse” directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez but who detests their employers the Weinsteins, has mixed feelings about helping to promote the film. “So, here we’ve got big media saying, ‘OK, the big conglomerates have produced a movie called Grindhouse for 50 million dollars, so let’s brainwash everybody into going to see Grindhouse.’ Now I, Lloyd Kaufman, have a feeling that Grindhouse will be a good movie because Tarantino and the other guy are definitely talented directors, so I’m quite confident it will be worthwhile.”
