The US box office increased 13 percent in the first quarter over the year-ago quarter, overcoming projections of a 2 percent downturn by a movie analyst.
The quarter’s box-office growth of $356 million from 2015 produced a total of $2.78 billion in domestic receipts. Strong performances by “Deadpool” and “Zootopia” contributed to the gain, according to Drexel Hamilton analyst Tony Wible.
Stronger-than-expected carryover performances from fourth-quarter releases “Star Wars,” “Daddy’s Home” and “The Revenant” also boosted the quarter’s domestic gross beyond the $2.43 billion originally projected by the analyst.
The industry is facing a tough second quarter, with comparison to year-ago hit “Jurassic World.”
